Will of Jonathan Dubose, Berkley Co., SC, 22 Jun 1771

In the Name of God, Amen, Jonathan Dubose of Berkley County in the Province of South Carolina Planter, being weak in Body but of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding thanks be to God for the same, do make and Ordain this to be and contain my last Will and Testament,

first and Principally I recommend my Soul into the Hand of Almighty God who gave it me hoping for the Remission of all my Sins thro' the Merits and Mediation of my blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,

Imprimis it is my Will and I hereby Order and direct that all my Just and Lawful Debts be first paid by my Executors hereafter mentioned,

Item It is my Will and I hereby Give devise and Bequeath unto my Beloved Daughter Mary Dubose one Young Negroe [sic] Wench named Cinder and her Encrease [sic] to her, her heirs Executors Administrators and Assigns forever.

Item it is my Will and I hereby give devise and Bequeath unto my beloved Daughter Esther Dubose one Negroe Girl named Delia to her, her heirs Executors, Administrators for ever [sic],

Item, It is my Will and I hereby Give devise and Bequeath unto my Beloved Son Joshua Dubose one negroe Boy named Prince to him, his heirs Executors administrators and assigns for ever,

Item it is my Will and I hereby Give devise and Bequeath unto my Beloved Daughter Catharine Dubose on negroe Girl named Tenah to her, her heirs Executors, administrators and assigns forever

Item it is my Will and I hereby Give devise and Bequeath unto my Beloved Son Joshua Dubose all my Real Estate wheresoever it may be together with half of my Wearing apparel to him his heirs Executors administrators and assigns forever,

Item It is my Will and I hereby Give devise and Bequeath unto Mr. John Wielden Jr. my Watch together with the other half of my Wearing apparel to him, his heirs administrators and assigns for ever.

Item, it is my Will and I Order my Executors hereafter mentioned to pay to Esther Norman my Niece the Sum of Three hundred pounds [£300] which is her full part or Dividend of my Brother Joshua Dubose Estate on which I administered also the Sum of one hundred and Twenty five pounds [£125] Currency of her fathers Estate being the full Sum in my hands on my acting as one of the Executors of said Estate.

Item It is my Will and I hereby order and direct that if either of my Children should die before they arrive to the age of Twenty one years or day of marriage that then his her or their part or part or [sic] parts or Dividends of my Real and Personal Estate shall be equally divided share and share alike between my Survivor or Surviving Child or Children herein Mentioned to them their heirs Executors administrators and assigns for ever.

Lastly I do hereby nominate Constitute and appoint my beloved Friends George Huggins, Senr. [Senior] Elisha Wheldin [sic: Wheldon] and Samuel White Executors to this my last Will and Testament hereby Revoking and making Void all former or other Wills by me made and acknowledging this to be my only true Will and Testament,

In Testimony whereof I have hereunto sett [sic] my hand and seal this Twenty Second day of June, in the Year of our Lord, one Thousand seven hundred and Seventy one [22 Jun 1771].

Item It is my Will and I hereby Order and direct that my Son Joshua Dubose shall be of age at the years of nineteen to receive his part or dividend of my Estate and shall by the virtue of this Will have full Power to give a full discharge to my Executors on Receiving his part or dividend at the said age of Nineteen Years as before Recited which.

In Testimony thereof I have hereunto subscribed my Name in the Presence of the subscribing Evidences
